Nestled on the southernmost tip of Puget Sound, Olympia, Washington's amazing scenic beauty is surpassed only by its intriguing history and eclectic subcultures.

A landscape of fjords and inlets formed by the ice age, it has been home to Squaxin, Nisqually, Puyallup, Chehalis, Suquamish, and Duwamish for thousands of years.

In the mid-19th century, Edmund Sylvester and Levi Smith founded the city of Olympia - and it later became Washington's state capital.

Around the turn of the century, Leopold Schimdt began brewing Olympia Beer (1896-2003), with its famous slogan "It's the Water." The beer and Olympia oysters helped put the town on the map.

The 1970's brought the founding of The Evergreen State College, quite possibly the most unconventional college in the nation.

Beginning in the 1980's, Olympia of all places emerged as an internationally known hotbed of punk rock music, thanks to pioneering musicians and record labels like K Records and Kill Rock Stars.

From the early pioneers to today's punk rockers, Olympia continues as a mystical place full of unique people. Perhaps "it's the water."
